[Hong Kong] Jason Chiu, Council Member of Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and CEO of Cherrypicks, joins a panel of 5G experts to discuss “The role of 5G in the Digital Transformation of Industry” at the APAC 5G Industry Forum – powered by GSMA and Huawei on 20 May. The panel discussion moderated by Jeanette Whyte, Head of Public Policy, GSMA APAC, included Pietro Borsano, Faculty member in entrepreneurship & core business at School of Integrated Innovation, Chulalongkorn University, Dustin Kehoe, APAC & ME Service Director, GlobalData, Peter Maquera, Senior Vice President for Enterprise Group Globe and Sam Majid, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, MCMC.
The panel contained experts of 5G deployment, adoption, and operations from Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand. Jason highlighted 3 ways that governments and regulators can provide a more supportive environment for 5G development. These include having the government providing a stable and open regulatory framework that allows a high degree of certainty that is conducive to investment by stakeholders, the second point is to build an ecosystem with combined 3G/4G/5G networks to leapfrog and help in connectivity and bridge the digital divide to unleash the power of 5G and change people’s lives. The third point he brought up was having governments encourage and fund SMEs with digital transformation and 5G applications. The panel also agreed that it would be beneficial if many governments in Asia work together to educate and accelerate the adoption of 5G, the momentum would be substantially enhanced.
